Heritage coffee brand Douwe Egberts debuts its first SA capsule range, targeting the rapidly growing premium at-home coffee sector.…
Douwe Egberts, one of the world’s most popular coffee brands, has launched its DE Excellent capsule range in South Africa, marking a significant step as the brand expands into the local single-serve capsule market for the first time.
“This is a pivotal moment for Douwe Egberts in South Africa,” says Mbulelo Mashilo, brand manager, Douwe Egberts South Africa. “As our brand continues to grow in recognition and value, entering the capsule space allows us to meet rising consumer demand for premium coffee solutions that fit into their everyday lives.”
With more coffee being brewed at home than ever before, the launch of DE Excellent capsules enables Douwe Egberts to tap into a fast-growing segment while continuing to build on its long-standing reputation for quality and consistency.
South Africa’s coffee market was valued at $674-million in 2023 and is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 7.35%, reaching over $1.1-billion by 2030, with the pods and capsules segment identified as one of the fastest-growing.
Recent insights from Statista also show that the overall market is expected to grow by approximately 7.2% annually between 2024 and 2028, largely driven by a shift toward at-home brewing and demand for premium convenience.
This data highlights a clear and growing consumer preference for high-quality, easy-to-use coffee solutions – precisely the need that Douwe Egberts is addressing with the launch of its DE Excellent capsule range in South Africa, Mashilo adds.
The range features two 100% Arabica blends:
- DE Excellent Mocca – A bold, intense blend with a slow, dark roast and indulgent chocolate undertones. Rated intensity 9, this capsule is suited for those who prefer a full-bodied, rich cup of coffee.
- DE Excellent Gold – Offering a more rounded flavour profile, this capsule delivers a slow roast with sweet, fruity notes, balanced at an intensity level of 7. It’s a smooth option that maintains the depth of a quality brew.
The capsules are compatible with Nespresso coffee machines. In addition, they are designed with sustainability in mind, made from recyclable materials to reduce environmental impact.
The range is now available at select retailers and online stores nationwide, at an RSP of R139.99 for 20 capsules, or R6.95 per serving.
