31 Oct 2024 Woolies unveils exclusive premium canned wine range
As it did with its launch of upmarket boxed wine, wine-loving fans of sustainable packaging will approve of this development….
WCellar, the liquor arm of Woolworths has introduced a new exclusive range of premium canned wines.
While wine purists might scoff at the thought, the alternatively packaged wine market is booming. Far from posing a threat to the industry and premium wines, it offers a lifeline and gateway to entice a new wine-drinking demographic.
“Created in collaboration with some of South Africa’s top winemakers, this innovative collection offers the perfect blend of convenience and sophistication, allowing consumers to enjoy the ease of a can without compromising on the quality of fine wine,” says WCellar.
“The popularity of canned wines has skyrocketed both locally and internationally, with Woolworths as an early adopter having introduced its first canned wines almost three years ago.
“And, with the next decade forecasted to see double-digit growth in canned wine sales, the new WCellar canned range is ideally poised to meet local demand.”

Consumers can choose from six exceptional varietals from renowned South African wine estates:
- Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc
- Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc
- De Wetshof Limestone Hill Chardonnay
- Haute Cabriere Tranquille Blush
- Beyerskloof Pinotage
- Ken Forrester SGM
While historically, there may have been a misconception that wine in a can meant a lower quality product, WCellar’s collaboration with premium wine estates and the use of top-tier cultivars intends to help dispel this myth.
“Our customers can trust that, as with our premium boxed wines, we are offering only the highest quality product in a format that suits their needs,” says Ian Wilson, WCellar category manager.
The range comes in packs of four 250ml slimline cans, designed as a single serving, equivalent to one large glass of wine.
“It’s become clear that there is a growing movement towards more conscious drinking, and canned wines are a convenient way to monitor and limit one’s consumption as needed,” Wilson adds.
“Whether it’s for outdoor events like braais or simply enjoying a glass without opening an entire bottle, this format is both practical and versatile and is sure to become a firm favourite.”
Priced between R119.99 and R159.99 for a 4-pack, the cans are also fully recyclable – underscoring Woolworths’ commitment to sustainability and environmentally responsible packaging.
