14 Jul 2024 Tethered closures from Polyoak
Foodbev packaging giant, Polyoak Packaging, a founding member of the SA Plastics Pact, has launched tethered closures for PET bottles…
As with many small plastic items, bottle closures and their tamper-evident rings are common litter items. Their small size makes it uneconomical for recycling, and increases the likelihood that they end up as litter in landfill or the environment.
Polyoak has tackled this challenge with the release of its 28mm tethered closure. The tethered closure ensures the cap remains attached to the PET bottle once opened, preventing litter and ensuring that caps are recycled as well.
The tethered closure is made from HDPE. It fits the same 28mm 1881 neck bottle and has print and embossing decoration options.
The SA Plastics Pact says it celebrates this innovation from Polyoak, recognising it as another member success story and an important step in the journey towards a circular eocnomy for plastic packaging.
Tethered caps law enters into force in EU
In related news, the tethered caps legislation proposed in 2018 and adopted in 2019 by the EU as part of the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) came into force on July 3, 2024.
From now, single-use 3-litre and smaller beverage containers with plastic caps and lids can only be placed on the EU market if the caps and lids remain attached to the containers during the products’ intended use and storage.
Introducing South Africa’s lightest CSD closure
Last year Polyoak introduced its 28 mm PET closure, but 21% lighter than normal, and implying a significantly reduced carbon footprint. The closure is compression moulded for optimised energy efficiency.
Closures are available with a wide range of matching preforms and PET bottles from Polyoak branches located nationwide.
