13 May 2015 Stellenbosch to host Winery 2015 sustainability congress
Since 1998, this bi-annual event has been held in wine-making countries around the world, including Chile, France, Italy, and Spain. This is the first time in Africa, with SA the designated as the host country, for this prestigious international conference.
The need for this type of forum is growing as global warming, water scarcity, market forces and environmental awareness are placing increasing pressure on the wine and related industries to adopt environmentally friendly and sustainable practices.
The scientific programme will provide a balance between original research and commercial applications of scientific research and topics/issues with generic appeal, including:
- effluent characterisation
- waste management
- aerobic and anaerobic treatment processes
- irrigation with wastewater
- wastewater quality improvement
- sustainable viticulture and oenology
- solid waste treatment and by-product recovery
- environmental assessment
- technology transfer from the winery as well as other relevant agri-industries
A full day Technical Tour on November 5 will comprise visits to winery wastewater treatment plants, showcasing some local installations and applications, while also giving the delegates a glimpse of the beautiful Western Cape winelands.
