19 Apr 2022 SAB’s Black Crown G&T is on a roll
A few years back SAB ventured out of beer into the gin & tonic space by launching Unapologetically African Gin & Tonic – ‘Black Crown’.
The brand that was born in Gauteng, in a small base of outlets, has since grown from strength to strength and is now available nationwide and in a new 440ml can format.
By way of background…. Following decades of producing some of the world’s finest/famous beers, ABInBev Africa started up ZX Ventures, an innovation hub, with a focus on products beyond beer.
In 2019, ZX Ventures Africa, ventured into the gin & tonic space with the launch of its first product – Black Crown, “an unapologetically African gin & tonic set to challenge the Eurocentric positioning of most gins in the South African market”.
The gin category volume in South Africa has seen exponential growth, steadily increasing since 2014. Gin RTDs have grown more than 20% in comparison to pre-Covid times – this trend is ongoing.
The proudly South African Black Crown is produced locally and “has subtle bursts of citrus aroma with a tantalising sweet, crisp and clean finish”.
The 5% alcohol-by-volume (ABV) brand is currently available in a 275ml non-returnable bottle in a single flavour – gin & tonic.
“Based on positive reception from South African consumers, we are pleased to announce the next phase of Black Crown’s portfolio expansion into a new 440ml can, opening the brand up to new consumption occasions making it accessible to even more South Africans,” says SAB.
Hitting shelves from April 2022, the new Unapologetically “AfriCAN” Black Crown 440ml can, will be available to purchase nationwide.
