SAAFost has announced details of its three, in-person workshops on SA’s new draft labelling regulations, R2986.
They will be led by experts: Jane Badham, Nigel Sunley and Janusz Luterek.
Gauteng workshop

Short profile of Jane Badham
Jane has a BSc in Dietetics, a Postgraduate Diploma in Hospital Dietetics, a Master’s degree in Nutrition, and a Diploma in Marketing Management and is a trained partnership broker. Jane has been running her own global health communication and strategy business, JB Consultancy, for 30 years.
JB Consultancy focuses on advising development agencies, NGOs, and the food industry, both locally and internationally, on issues pertaining to nutrition with a special focus on food law, policy, micronutrient malnutrition, food fortification and maternal, infant and young child nutrition.
JB Consultancy is renowned for masterly taking international and national food/health regulations and evidence-based science of health and nutrition to diverse audiences at all levels and for its commitment to policy, practice and behaviour change, for ultimately improved health.
Jane is well known for her facilitation skills. Jane has co-authored a number of peer-reviewed articles, has received awards for her scientific writing and has been the recipient of an (Association for Dietetics in South Africa) ADSA-Award for her contribution to the profession. Jane has served on a number of local and global nutrition organisations and associations.
Short profile of Janusz F Luterek, Pr Eng
Janusz holds degrees in both Chemical Engineering from the University of Pretoria and Law from UNISA and is a registered Attorney, Patent Attorney, Professional Engineer and he is a partner at Hahn & Hahn, and a Custodian Member of SAAFoST. Janusz received the SAAFoST President’s Award in 2019.
Janusz has assisted many leading listed companies as well as the CGCSA and SAAFoST with their various Foodstuffs, Cosmetics, and Disinfectants Act and Regulations, Medicines and Related Substances Act and Regulations, and Consumer Protection Act submissions to various Government Departments and Parliament as well as implementation in their businesses.
Janusz assisted many companies with their R429 submissions in 2014 and this in-depth knowledge will be of great value in commenting on legal issues in R2986.

Short profile of Nigel Sunley
Nigel has a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Leeds and an MSc in Food Science from the University of Natal.
He spent 32 years in the food industry with both South African and multinational food companies, mainly in R&D but also in manufacturing & manufacturing support functions. He then started his own business, Sunley Consulting, in 2007, based in Johannesburg but conducting consultancy work both in South Africa and in many other parts of the world and specialising in the commercial food science/nutrition interface and the regulatory management of food.
Nigel is a past president of SAAFoST and chaired the organising committee for the 15th World Congress of Food Science & Technology held in Cape Town in 2010. He was a member of the global Governing Council of the International Union of Food Science & Technology (IUFoST) from 2010-2014.
He is an Honorary Life Member of SAAFoST, was elected as a member of the International Academy of Food Science & Technology, a by-invitation grouping of approximately 200 of the world’s leading food science & technology professionals, in 2014 and for several years chaired the joint liaison committee for food science and nutrition in South Africa on behalf of the ISC (International Scientific Council).
