20 Oct 2019 KHS debuts 100% rPET bottle made for shelf life and recycling
German filling and packaging systems company, KHS, has developed a new fully recyclable juice bottle by using 100% rPET.
The new Beyond Juice bottle is made from 100% recyclate and features the FreshSafe PET barrier system, a wafer-thin layer of glass on the inside of the bottle that helps prevent oxygen from entering the bottle and CO2 from escaping from it. This helps extend the shelf life of sensitive juices and spritzers.
The bottle can again be bottle-to-bottle recycled after use as opposed to other barrier systems, the SiOx coating can be completely removed from the PET material during the standard recycling process.
The concept has been developed with and approved by environmental company, Interseroh, that issued its ‘Made for Recycling’ seal for the new container.
Interseroh packaging engineer, Julian Thielen, said: “Thanks to the seal on the label, for the first time consumers can now allow the bottle’s truly excellent recycling properties to help influence their decision to buy when standing in front of the supermarket shelf.”
“In an attempt to appeal to the emotions of the consumer – even without a conspicuous label – the bottle has an attractive, all-round surface structure or embossing. This relief print is a real eye-catcher on the shelves,” he adds.
Says KHS: “We have developed it to provide a concrete answer to the current debate on packaging and to meet the demands of producers of sensitive beverages such as fruit juice, spritzers or wine. The aim of the project was to leave as small a carbon footprint as possible while making a sizeable contribution to the circular economy.”
KHS adds the bottle has also been developed as a film-free pack for recycling purposes.
With Nature MultiPackT packaging system, the bottles are held together by dots of adhesive that are strong and secure, as well as easy to remove.
KHS Corpoplast barrier technology product manager, Philipp Langhammer, said: “With Beyond Juice we’re providing concrete answers to the challenges of the beverage industry, taking the juice bottle as an example.
“Also in view of the current debate on plastics practical, environmentally-friendly systems are becoming more and more important.”
