Big boost for rooibos fortunes

China has removed the final 6% import tariff on South African Rooibos, effective 1 May 2026….. a shift the local industry is calling one of the most meaningful trade wins in years.

The tariff removal comes as SA exporters diversify away from markets where trade conditions have become less favourable.

The South African Rooibos Council (SARC) says the move creates a significant new export opportunity in a market where demand for caffeine‑free, health‑positioned teas is rising.

Why this matters:

  • Rooibos already has a good foothold in China, but tariffs have kept it at a price disadvantage.
  • Japan remains the biggest Asian buyer of Rooibos, but China’s scale offers far greater long‑term upside.
  • The new zero‑tariff regime improves landed pricing, retailer margins, and consumer accessibility.
  • China is the world’s largest tea‑drinking nation — even a small share of this market represents meaningful volume for SA producers.

Anticipated good news for the industry

The tariff removal is expected to ripple across the entire Rooibos ecosystem — from Cederberg farmers to processors, packers and brand owners.

  • Uplift in export volumes and processing‑side employment.
  • Stronger case for investment in capacity, market development, and product innovation (eg functional blends, RTDs, wellness formats).
  • Aligns with China’s broader zero‑tariff policy for African imports, signalling deeper SA–China trade cooperation.

SARC says it will work closely with exporters and Chinese partners to build awareness and educate consumers on Rooibos’ flavour profile, versatility and health halo.
