09 Dec 2013 Soweto Gold – Superior Lager sells out
The beer is made in South Africa’s newest and only township microbrewery, MadMaster. Brewer Ndumiso Madlala says: “The response to Soweto Gold has been phenomenal. Our phones are ringing off the hook. We are getting requests from all over the country and even from as far as the US.”
Soweto Gold was first launched to the public at the Soweto Beer Festival in October 2013 and has since popped up at various locations in Soweto, Sandton and greater Johannesburg. Soweto Gold is available on tap at Nambitha and Roots in Soweto; at Metro in Benmore in Sandton; at Randlords in Braamfontein; and at Promise Grill in Meyerdal.
Madlala says: “We have been fortunate to create great relations with restaurant and bar owners, who support us and tell us that our brew and brand outsell many of the other world-class premium beers. We are filling orders daily and I have been forced to increase productions with our production partners at Nottingham Road Brewery to keep up.”
Soweto Gold is released exclusively in 440ml cans to retail and MadMead Brewing is working together with Shoprite Liquor to bring the brew to market, first in Gauteng then taking it nationwide. Madlala says they will continue brewing to keep up with demand.
Soweto Gold – Superior Lager is owned by MadMead Brewing Co and is currently brewed under license by Nottingham Road Brewery in Midlands, Natal. MadMead Brewing Co expects to open its own microbrewery in Orlando, Soweto in March 2014.
Other products in the portfolio will include Soweto Gold – Premium Pilsner; Soweto Weiss Gold; Liquid Gold – Speciality Beer; and Soweto Lady Gold. All beers have an ABV of 5.2%.
The MadMead Brewing Co is a majority black-owned brewery venture and offers black economic empowerment as well as BBBEE employment and revenue creation in the liquor industry in both manufacturing and distribution.
