Last week, Pioneer Foods recalled a batch of its LiquiFruit Red Grape 330ml cans, after reports that the drinks contained pieces of glass. Not so fast…
Yesterday, however, the company announced that the “glass” was actually potassium bitartrate crystals, or cream of tartar, a naturally-occurring substance in grape products.
“Crystallisation occurs under certain conditions such as low temperature and in this case occurred post-processing and canning,” Pioneer Foods said in a statement.
“Pioneer Foods apologises for any anxiety and concern caused whilst we awaited the outcome of the detailed analysis of the crystals.”
It still advised South Africans not to drink or dispose of the cans, but to return cans for a full refund.
